New challenges in cosmetic formulations: Innovative, environmentally friendly and non-toxic microparticles
Abstract
Cosmetic skin-care products are used daily to clean, protect and give a younger appearance to the skin. There is a growing demand for effective products that are able to address specific skin problems of consumers. To this end, a variety of active ingredients (vitamins, polyphenols, essentials oils), are introduced due to their wide range of properties (antioxidant, anti-aging, photo-protective). However, the use of these actives is very often limited because of their: a) low solubility, b) low ability to cross the dermal barrier and above all c) chemical instability to environment. An effective delivery system must meet several conditions: long-term protection of the biological properties of the active, its controlled release, long-term stability, safety and sensoriality.
