Approach for a categorization of European ports based on containership calls in 2020.

Résumé

Since 2014, the transport capacities of container ships have doubled from 12,500 TEUs in 2014 to 24,000 TEUs for the last ships in service belonging to the generation Magamax 24. With the diminution of shipping companies after various takeovers or mergers, shipping operators have come together in alliances with the objective of exchanging spaces on board. Since 2019, the alliances have stabilized at the number of 3 (2M, Ocean Alliance and The Alliance) bringing together 9 operators and thus representing more than 20 million TEUs of transport capacity, or 80% of the total capacity of the world fleet. Maritime transport is heavily dependent on these alliances and the commercial services of the ports try to influence their choice of calls by emphasizing their competitive advantages. Indeed, a high level of service offered by the alliances is synonymous with a strong maritime connection to the main global production and consumption markets and therefore makes it possible to attract chargers. But the presence of independent operators who generally provide regional maritime links should not be overlooked. The objective of this presentation will be to establish a categorization of European ports (hub ports, medium ports, secondary ports, etc.) based on different evaluation criteria (presence of alliances, presence of independent operators, typology of container ships in calls, connection with other ports, etc.). This study will be based on the use of AIS data.
