Advantages of PCR for pathogenic Brachyspira strains identification in swine
Apports de la PCR pour l'identification des souches de Brachyspira pathogènes chez le porc
Résumé
All intestinal spirochetes are not pathogenic for swine. Brachyspira hyodysenteriae and Brachyspira pilosicoli are responsible of swine dysentery and porcine intestinal spirochaetosis respectively, and are the most economically important species. To this regard, it's important that the different strains could be differentiated. In this study, realized on 102 strains isolated in France, we have compared the phenotypic parameters (hemolysis, indole production, hippurate hydrolysis, α-galactosidase activity, α-glucosidase activity and ß-glucosidase activity) and genotypic parameters (PCR detection). Among the tested strains were several differencies between the biochemical classification [5] and PCR results. We have observed Brachyspira hyodysenteriae strains without indole production and Brachyspira pilosicoli without α-galactosidase activity. PCR results showed 14 % of pathogenic strains
