Culture and Management: from Pragmatic Approach to Anthropology and Recognition of Individual Cultural Differences through Identity Dilemma

Helena Karjalainen

Résumé

The number of studies on culture and cultural differences has been growing since the beginning of globalization, within the context of internationalization of organizations and, in particular, the growing number of staff members from different cultures. But, as observed by several authors the recognition of cultural differences as well as the concept of cultural identity has remained limited due to the influential studies by Hofstede that have reinforced interest in national cultures. While giving predominance to national culture in international management research, the questions concerning cultural identity have been growing ever more complex in cross-cultural and global settings. The objective of this study is to highlight the importance of the role of cultural identity as an explanatory factor to an individual evaluating cultural differences. Recent studies explain that not only are today’s identities multi-faceted, but they are constructed through symbolic meanings which are themselves becoming more fragmented and without boundaries as a result of the process of globalization.
