From Galland to Dumas : the Novelistic Metamorphosis of the Oriental Tale
De Galland à Dumas. La métamorphose romanesque du conte oriental
Résumé
The article focuses on the inscription of The Thousand and One Nights in Alexandre Dumas’ Count of Monte-Cristo, and on the role played by this hypotext in the invention of an original novelistic poetics. Far from being only an exotic decor, the oriental supernatural is powerfully brought to life within the novel, through the mythic treasure that provides the hero with a divine omnipotence and allows him to construct a parallel world that matches his desires: Monte-Cristo and his entourage live in the ima-ginary Orient of Arabian tales. Furthermore, the novelist draws the very principles of his aesthetics from this collection of tales: revitalized by its transformed generic horizon, the marvellous becomes the key of the narrative, based on admiration as a dramatic art; conceived as a saving revolt against the tyranny of the real, the rewriting of oriental tales takes on the value of a manifesto; finally, the deliberate likening of the novel to The Thousand and One Nights reveals the writer’s founding fantasy: that of an immemorial, autonomous, perennial work.
