A patient’s testimony: Ulrich von Hutten’s De guaiaci medicina et morbo Gallico liber

Hutten first displayed the symptoms of syphilis when he was seventeen, and doctors considered several times that he was lost. At least, in 1518, he received gaiacum treatment and felt so much better that he believed that he was healed. Immediately after the cure he wrote a book for his contemporaries, De guaici medicina et morbo Gallico liber. It’s not a medical treatise but the very personnal book of a patient who has skills in medicine and who wants above all to share his knowledge and to be helpful to others. We’ll first study the book’s nature, and see that it’composed both of elements coming from treatises about guaiacum published in 1517-1518 and from personal experience ; then we’ll consider the way Hutten describes french pox’s symptoms, and at least we’ll examine very intimate informations such as sensations and feelings.
Atteint par la syphilis « au sortir de l’enfance », comme il le dit lui-même, plusieurs fois considéré comme perdu par les médecins, le chevalier Ulrich von Hutten crut avoir obtenu la guérison à l’automne 1518 après s’être soumis à la cure de gaïac. Il écrivit aussitôt un ouvrage destiné aux autres malades qu’il intitula De guaiaci medicina et morbo Gallico liber. Il ne s’agit pas de l’ouvrage d’un médecin mais de celui, très personnel, d’un patient doté de connaissances médicales, qui souhaite avant tout partager son expérience et être utile à son prochain. Après avoir analysé la nature de l’œuvre, qui procède, pour une part, de plusieurs traités sur le gaïac des années 1517-1518 et, pour une autre, d’éléments personnels, nous nous attacherons à étudier la description des symptômes avant de finir par les éléments plus personnels et intimes que l’œuvre nous permet de connaître, les sensations et sentiments éprouvés par l’auteur pendant sa maladie.
